Advantages and Disadvantages of Private Cloud

Deploying private cloud services has got both advantages and disadvantages.  The main advantage is that private cloud services are configured according to the business needs of a firm because the infrastructure for the service is built in-house and is used by a single organization. While on the other hand, public cloud lacks this specialty as it is a service that is outsourced to many clients who share a common platform. The other advantages include:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Better security
  • On-site support

One disadvantage of private cloud services is that it requires quite a large initial investment and is costly to maintain. The companies may have to incur some extra cost when it is required to upgrade the software’s and increase the server storage space. However, private cloud services are termed to be beneficial in long term. It can result in overall cost savings if a proper strategy is worked out in advance, to bring in all the benefits.

How to implement a private cloud?

  • While creating a strategy for private cloud implementation, the foremost thing that a company should consider is their business needs. They should be aware of their data and business needs and see if the available private cloud services in the market will be able to cater those business needs.
  • Secondly, the companies should ensure that they have proper infrastructure such as CPU, memory, disk space, network/configuration that can support cloud platform. This is because a proper infrastructure facility is critical to the success of cloud implementation.
  • Thirdly, companies should be aware of the scams that are prevailing in the cloud market. There are many companies who just sell servers and storage spaces and offer them as private cloud services where in actually they are not. Firms should be cautious enough to stay away from such pitfalls.

It is widely said that there is an increasing trend among the companies to adopt private cloud services over public cloud. Hence it is essential for the companies to determine the best strategy to employ private cloud services that is flexible and is user driven.
