The publishing industry has undergone a huge shift with the introduction of e-books. E-publishing has become a major trend and is now adopted in books, magazines etc. The paper form is now replaced with the electronic or digital form. There are many advantages associated with this which includes reduced cost of production, reduced investment, reduced inventory and the increased reach across the world.

  1. The growing market- The technological advancement across the globe has contributed to the growth of the e-publishing market. Various technological developments such as personal computer and handheld devices have contributed positively, with the explosion in number of people using such devices. There is also increase in the number of users of various e-book readers, which gives them mobility and the pleasure of reading books. Access to internet connectivity and the increase in online courses too contribute to the growth of the market.

  2. Wide range of content- With the increased popularity of internet, there has been an increase in the use of internet to access digital content. There are different types of content that are now offered digitally and the number is on the rise. The interest of the readers depends on the content and how it is organized. The most preferred reading materials are updates, facts and well prepared information that can be easily used. The number of students preferring e-books has increased as it is cheap and easy than a printed one.

  3. Various issues- There are various issues related to piracy and copyright that needs to be addressed before going completely online. There are issues such as plagiarism and infringement of copyright that is a real problem to the authors. There are many hackers who make books or other materials free for download, without the consent of the publishers. This will lead to loss of revenue for the publishers

  4. E-publishing as means to test the market- The publishers now use digital media to collect the response from the readers before the hardcopy is printed and offered for sale. If the response from the readers is positive, then the publishers would go for printing the books.

  5. Authors approach towards e-publishing- Even though e-publishing help the authors to reach out to large audience, e-books are not considered as an independent means of publishing. It is offered along with the print version, as the print means is still wanted by a majority. More over there is problem of piracy. Still there are authors who do not have the scale to go for printed versions. Such authors prefer e-publishing.

  6. Providers in the market- There are many who offer e-books readers such as Kindle, Apple iSlate, etc. There are also smart phones and tablets that support e-book reading.

  7. E-books to improve- It is predicted that e-books will improve over the time. The mobility offered by the devices and the ease will make it more preferable among the readers.
