November 24, 2011: Maersk line, one of the world’s biggest shipping companies has entered into a contract with Hewlett-Packard Denmark to outsource its infrastructure services. With the agreement worth more than $ 150 million, Maersk plans to outsource its technology infrastructure to HP. This was announced by both the companies.
The agreement which extends to a period of five years will enable Hewlett-Packard to develop a private cloud computing environment using HP cloud computing solution. The cloud will be used for Maersk’s distributed and local applications. More over HP will manage of the Service support desk unit at Maersk Line. HP will maintain computing devices which include desktop and laptop personal computers, for about 38,000 users in more than 100 nations. In addition to this HP will provide employment to every Maersk staff within this area, according to the contract.
According to Mike Nefkens, Se Vice President with HP Enterprise Services, Maersk being the world leader in the shipping industry is making significant changes in the market and it now requires reliable technology platform to substantiate its efforts. He said that Hewlett Packard will use its cloud computing expertise and experience to help Maersk to accomplish its global strategy, by assisting the in managing their complicated technology environment which will make the internal IT leaders capable of expanding their support.
Adam Gade, CIO at Maersk Line says that Maersk Line operates in an aggressive global market which requires innovation to develop active technology infrastructure which will help them to be the leaders among the other players in the industry. He added that the expertise and experience of HP in standardizing technology across the globe will help Maersk to add great value to their operations and thus remain the world’s most trusted container shipping company.
Maersk Line is the global container shipping division of A.P Moller – Maersk Group. It is not clear whether HP will offer IT solution which includes POD, HP’s containerized data center. Presently HP serves Maersk Line with its technology and support services, in addition to hardware such as personal computers, servers, networking devices and storage devices.
