Motif, Inc. Case Study – Accelerating the Learning Curve by implementing Six Sigma practices
Client profile and requirement
The client is one of the largest online auction companies in the world. The company serves as a platform for the members to buy and sell anything ‘online’. The company has millions of registered users across the globe.
The client requires Motif to reduce the learning curve for new team members from eight weeks to five weeks due to quick ramp up requirement.
Motif’s challenge and solution
Motif’s challenge was to identify and implement a strategy to reduce the learning curve. Motif designed and developed five weeks re-engineering process in accordance to six sigma practices.
The process was started by conducting the awareness program which provided exposure to all the team members regarding the philosophy and strategy for achieving the desired result. Historical performance information was collected and carefully analyzed to set a proper target level. This helped Motif to define performance measurement criteria to identify the performance gap. Objective performance expectations were established by developing a set of Key Performance Indicators and the corresponding target values to be achieved at the end of the nesting period (learning curve period). Another concurrent process was also associated with daily reporting cycles that provide the actionable tracking information used day to day in monitoring performance.
Team managers provided tangible goals to the team members in the form of minimum score requirements in each of the skill assessments. To facilitate faster learning curve, team members could repeat assessments as needed to improve skills and meet targets. Online access was provided to all the team members to view performance metrics; it provided a unique resource for team members independent of the schedule reviews.
Team managers monitored learning progress in detail which enabled them to focus on specific skill improvement. Team managers conducted immediate training and coaching to address the skills gaps. As a result, Motif was able to shorten the duration of the learning curve, as well as validate the successful acquisition of new skills.
Implementation of this process ensured a focused approach towards the areas of improvements and resulted into:
